Early Childhood Evaluations
Children grow and learn at their own pace, and it isn't always easy to tell what's typical and what would benefit from support. We evaluate young children, ages 6 and under, so you understand how your toddler or young child learns, thinks, and processes the world around them — and what helps them thrive.

From first words to the first day of school.
For young children, a developmental evaluation gives a holistic picture when there are delays or challenges such as in speech, big emotions and behaviors, trouble functioning in daycare or preschool, a suspected neurodevelopmental condition, or a complex medical history like premature birth or a genetic condition.
Focused on your question — nothing you don't need
A parent interview
Usually over video, covering all areas of development: early cognitive and motor skills, language, play and social skills, regulation, and adaptive skills.
A naturalistic observation
When helpful, at daycare, school, or camp — children show different skills in different settings.
Rating scales
Sent by email to gather parent and teacher input across settings.
In-office testing
A session using assessments designed for your child's age and question.
A feedback session
Usually over video, where we review results, strengths, challenges, any diagnosis, and tailored recommendations — often on simple visual slides we send you afterward.
A comprehensive written report
Yours to own and share with school and providers.
A clear understanding of your child's developmental profile, any diagnosis that fits, and practical recommendations for home, school, and any therapies or services that would help.
Frequently asked questions
My child has a speech delay — is this the right evaluation?
Often, yes. A developmental evaluation looks at the whole picture, including language, so you understand whether a delay stands alone or is part of something broader, and what support makes sense.
Will the school accept the report for an IEP or 504 Plan?
The report documents your child's needs with specific recommendations, and families across Richmond Public Schools, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover use it to support that process. The school makes the final eligibility decision.
Do you see families from around Richmond, and what does an evaluation cost?
