Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

When a young child has frequent tantrums, trouble following directions, or big emotions that are hard to manage, it can wear on the whole family. PCIT is live-coached, evidence-based therapy for children ages 2–7 that strengthens the parent-child bond while giving you practical tools to guide behavior with calm and consistency.

What Makes PCIT Different

You practice the skills live, with support.

PCIT uses live coaching. During sessions we observe you and your child and give you real-time feedback — in person in the office, or virtually while you and your child play at home with your own toys. You leave able to use positive parenting strategies with real confidence, because you've practiced them in the moment with support.

PCIT has two phases. In Child-Directed Interaction (CDI), you learn to follow your child's lead in play using specific skills that build warmth, attention, and cooperation — the bond that everything else builds on. Once those skills are solid, Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI) helps you give clear instructions, set consistent boundaries, and follow through predictably, which reduces disruptive behavior and helps your child listen and cooperate.

Each phase starts with a teaching session to learn the skills, followed by coaching sessions with real-time guidance until you've mastered them. Treatment usually runs 12–16 weeks, and many parents notice improvement during the first phase.
